Absenteeism irks opposition MP
Close to three quarters of members of Parliament (MPs) were late yesterday, prompting calls for a roll call to determine who was in the House.
By the time Second Deputy Speaker of Parliament Aisha Mambo Adams began proceedings, only three of the 49 seats were filled in one column. The rest of the sections were not better.

This prompted Thyolo Central MP Ben Phiri of the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) to call for a roll call.
“The responses to the Mid-Year Budget Review Statement is important but it seems like members from the government side are not taking it seriously,” he said.
However, the request was met with cat calls from the government benches, with some shouting that they were not children to be subjected to head counts.
Government business then proceeded as normal without a headcount.
